Who is authorized to fly armed while traveling on AirTran Airways?

Law enforcement officers, under certain limited circumstances, may be allowed to fly armed while traveling on AirTran Airways. They must present a completed Carry-On Firearms Authorization form and meet TSA requirements.


TSA Requirements to Fly Armed

Federal Law Enforcement Officers who are direct employees of a government agency and have credentials and identification that include:

  • Clear full face picture
  • Bearer’s signature
  • Signature of responsible official of the law enforcement authority or the seal of the Federal deaprtment or agency

State, Local or County Law Enforcement Officers who are direct employees of a government agency, authorized to carry firearms and meet the following requirements:

  • Must have required credentials and identification
    • Clear full face picture
    • Bearer’s signature
    • Signature of responsible official of the law enforcement authority or the seal of the Federal deaprtment or agency
  • Must be carrying in the line of duty
  • Must have a letter that specifies the circumstance(s) that create(s) the need to be armed
    • Be on letterhead of the jurisdiction employing the officer
    • Be signed by a supervisory official
    • Specify the trip and include a designated period during which the need will exist

Foreign nationals who are armed escorts of foreign dignitaries

Coordination between FAA, Station Management and System Dispatch is required.
