Raising the bar in the airline industry, the 717 aircraft has proven itself to be the quietest, most economical and fuel-efficient twinjet in the sky today. Introduced to the flying public by AirTran Airways in 1998, the 717 has increased profitability for the airline and smoothed the way for additional technological advancements in future aircraft models.
The 717 is ideally suited for short-range routes with quick airport turnaround times. With a range of more than 1,500 statute miles, the 717 can fly all day with minimal ground servicing. Developed using the DC-9’s airframe durability, the 717 aircraft features structural refinements, environmentally friendly engines, an updated flight deck with technologically advanced avionics’ systems, a new interior and enhanced performance.
"AirTran Airways saved more than $3 million in fuel costs alone in its first year of operation," said Joe Leonard, AirTran’s chairman and chief executive officer. "We estimate our maintenance costs have dropped 45 percent. Now that we have all 717 aircraft in our fleet, we’re not only the youngest fleet in America, but perhaps the most cost-efficient as well."
